Organic Pastures Dairy in CA.
Organic Pastures Dairy in CA. January 17, 2003: Something about this creamery is not quite right. It’s not the smell, in fact there’s no odor to speak of. The air is good and cool, the lighting bright, all surfaces clean—that’s all right. It’s just so… empty. As owner Mark McAfee guides me into the first room, I wonder if there is machinery built into the walls or behind a green curtain like in Oz. This is, after all, the processing facility behind perhaps the most revolutionary dairy in the United States, yet there’s no technology—just a butter churn that looks like a solid chrome bingo cage and a bottling machine that could fit in the back of my pick-up. When I say this politely, Mark’s delighted smile tells me I’ve hit on the very essence of his operation. He puts it plainly: “When you don’t screw with Mother Nature, things stay simple. ” Organic Pastures Dairy is an unassuming cluster of buildings in Kerman, California; a CCOF-certified organic blip on the Fresno County radar. The creamery is built from two reefer vans outfitted with just basics—sinks, counters, water, and uncomplicated machines. Category: Organic Pasture

Horse Pasture Safety (Illini HorseNet) — University of Illinois Extension
Horse Pasture Safety (Illini HorseNet) — University of Illinois Extension Illini HorseNet Papers Horse Pasture Safety R. D. Scoggins, DVM, Equine Extension Veterinarian, University of Illinois College of Veterinary Medicine 05/04/2007 Horses are far less susceptible to the digestive upsets created by pasture forages than are ruminants. Since they continually graze and move, horses rarely develop fermentation problems, as cattle do with bloating. However, other problems do arise, so owners should manage their pastures carefully and consider such issues as the quality of the grasses and the presence of poisonous plants and intestinal parasites. Grasses with high fructan production give rise to the risk of obesity and/or laminitis. These grasses, which are useful in sheep or cattle production, may prove harmful for horses. In addition, if the availability of feed is limited, the risk of horses eating poisonous plants may increase. Horses are notoriously hard on pastures in the physical sense. They are the most active of our large, domestic livestock. Their running and playing will frequently use up more grass than their grazing. Category: Horse In Pasture
