Friday, February 1, 2008 Misplaced ambition A tale of two trees: White oaks—brothers, most likely—growing up side by side near the cliff, overlooking the tumbling stream below. About my age, but much taller, stronger—and more stable. Anchored to their birthplace, yet reaching for the sky’s limit, they’ve guarded this bluff and sheltered the lesser creatures for a long time. A rogue beaver: no family ties, no stability but change, and wanderlust for blood. Concerned only with a full belly, and shelter when necessary—yet an insatiable need for gnawing, felling, pulling, piling. Cut a sapling or a dozen: they’re chock-a-block. Nibble awhile, then stash the carcass—tow it cross-stream and stockpile. Return for more. But look—twin towers! Oak—hard, and not the preferred taste—but my, what trophies to topple.

#5 is Chris Amon in a McLaren Mk1B-Chevrolet ; #91 is Skip Scott in a McLaren Mk1B-Chevrolet; I can't identify the white car, or the blue car following. Mark Donohue in Roger Penske's Sunoco Lola-T-70-Chevrolet crests the hill. My guess is that Amon & Donohue are lapping the other three. Donohue finished 4th, Scott finished 17th, and Amon DNF'd in the race .

Homeopathy on the Farm by Anne Lazor After homesteading and building a small farm for years using organic practices, we got officially certifies in 1989 as the second dairy farm in Vermont to be certified organic. At this time there were no precedents established for organic standards in dairy farming. Two small dairies wrote the rules according to what we thought was significant and feasible for organic dairy. Soil fertility and mineralization were the foundation. Alternatives in health practices, self sufficiency in feed production- through intensive grazing and/or raising organic grain crops were primary focuses. Although we set standards to allow for the use of antibiotics in life or death situations, the challenge was to find other ways to treat cows' ailments . Initially, we found a probiotic, ID-1, derived from colostrum whey. We used this extensively for mastitis, and determined it to be useful for many streptococcus mastitis cases, but not for E.coli or Staph. aureus mastitis. For cases of ketosis and as a preventative to milk fever when cows freshened we used a "strengthening medicine" called Nutri-lac which was a combination of fermented molasses, acidophilus , and minerals.
